Imagine a little girl, about five to seven years old, standing in the driveway of her childhood home while her uncle, wearing a maroon cardigan, tells her: "You are smart. You are a good, and kind person."
The details of the day have long since faded. What they had been doing. What else they talked about. None of that remains. What she remembers are the words he spoke.
She doesn't know it yet, but those words will stay with her for the rest of her life. Nearly sixty years later, she will still remember exactly where she was standing when she heard them.
That little girl was me.
As I reflect on another birthday, I find myself thinking about the people who have influenced my life and the moments that have stayed with me over the years.
This memory is one of them.
There have been times throughout my life when I have questioned my intelligence. Times when self-doubt showed up. Times when I wondered if I was capable enough. Yet somehow, those words remained. A quiet reminder from someone who saw something good in me.
I often wonder if Uncle Fred had any idea the impact those few words would have. My guess is he didn't. Most of us don't.
That's the ripple effect of kindness. We rarely know how far our words will travel. We don't always see the impact of our encouragement. We may never know how a kind gesture, a thoughtful note, a listening ear, or a few sincere words affect another person's life.
Yet they do. More often than we realize.
Every day, we have opportunities to create ripples. A compliment. A word of encouragement. A moment of patience. A genuine expression of gratitude. A reminder to someone that they matter.

These things may seem small. They are not. Sometimes a few words stay with a person for a lifetime.
As I think about that driveway moment, I find myself grateful for the people who have spoken kindness into my life.
I am also reminded that each of us has the opportunity to do the same for someone else. Perhaps today is the day to tell someone what you appreciate about them. Perhaps today is the day to encourage someone who is struggling. Perhaps today is the day to remind someone of the goodness you see in them. You never know which words another person may carry with them for the next fifty years.
That is the ripple effect of kindness.
