Why "Be Kinder Than Necessary" Matters

Jerilyn Brown with Be Kinder Than Necessary quote, promoting BKTN365™ and Your Kind Mind™ personal growth and self-kindness philosophy.

Welcome.

If you've spent any time around me, you've probably heard me say four simple words:

Be Kinder Than Necessary

I've signed emails with it. I've written it on cards. I've shared it in workshops and conversations for years.

Recently, someone asked me a simple question: "Why not just say 'Be Kind'?" It's a fair question. Being kind is important. In fact, I believe kindness is one of the most powerful choices we can make. Yet, for me, "Be Kinder Than Necessary" means something different. It asks us to go a little further. Be a little more patient. Be a little more gracious. Be a little more understanding. Be a little more generous.

Not because someone earned it. Not because they deserve it. Not because we are trying to be perfect. Because it reflects who we choose to be. Being Kind is the standard. Being kinder than necessary is the intention. It's the choice to bring a little more light into a moment than is required.

The interesting thing is that many of us are fairly good at extending kindness to others. We encourage friends. We support our family. We offer grace to strangers.

Yet, we often struggle to extend that same kindness to ourselves. We criticize ourselves for mistakes. We hold ourselves to impossible standards. We speak to ourselves in ways we would never speak to someone we love.

That is why Your Kind Mind™ exists. Because kindness is not just something we give away. It is something we cultivate within. The way we think. The way we speak to ourselves. The way we respond when life doesn't go according to plan. The way we choose to show up in the world.

When we become kinder to ourselves, things begin to shift. Our relationships change. Our communication changes. Our choices change. And little by little, the world around us changes too.

That is the heart of BKTN365™ — Be Kinder Than Necessary, 365 days a year. Not just during the holidays. Not just when life is easy. Not just when people deserve it. Every day. One choice. One interaction. One moment at a time.

Thank you for being here at the beginning of The Kindness Kronicles. I look forward to sharing stories, reflections, and practical ways to live with greater kindness, awareness, integrity, and intention.

Until next time, Be Kinder Than Necessary  (BKTN365™),

Jerilyn Brown

Kindness…… how much do we love ourselves is the biggest question?
